Gothenburg GAA traveled for the 1st round of the Scandinavian Football Championship to Copenhagen and what a scorching hot day it was...but the performance was outstanding against very tough competion.

Score-line as follows

Match 1 - Gothenburg 1-6 Oslo 0-0

Match 2 - Gothenburg 0-2 Copenhagen 2-7

Match 3 - Gotheburg 0-4 Malmo 0-5

Match 4 - Gothenburg 1-1 Stockholm 1-8.

Full marks to Mia Bira who represented Gothenburg with pride in a Copenhagen vs Gothenburg/Stockholm friendly match on the day.

Round 2 of the Pan-European Tournament in Copenhagen 29th August 2009

You would have to travel a long distance and watch a lot of Gaelic games to come across a team that deserved to win a tournament as much as Gothenburg deserved to win the Pan-European Shield competition in Copenhagen.

In the week before the tournament Gothenburg lost two influential players when David Burke and Gary McKiernan got injured at training. This meant that Gothenburg travelled with a squad of just 13 players, including two debutants. To add to this, Peter Brennan got injured in the first half of the first match and could only play a bit part in the remaining games.

The group games and semi-final took their toll and almost all the players had taken some knocks and were suffering from cramp, sore groins and hamstrings and exhaustion. When substitutions were made it was a case of an injured player being replaced by a slightly less injured player.

As for the final, it had everything: team scores; individual efforts; last-minute goals; last-minute penalties; last-minute equalisers; controversial decisions; yellow and red cards; near misses; blood sweat and tears. Rarely does a whole team play as well as the Gothenburg team did on that day. It was a victory for hard work, determination, and above all, a victory for discipline. Gothenburg had a game plan and every player stuck precisely to their job. It can be said, without fear of contradiction, that every player was outstanding and if any of the players was taken out of the equation then the team would not have been victorious.

It all came down to the final match of the day between Malmö and Copenhagen and even then it had to go the the score boards from both rounds but in the end Malmö GAA club in their first year on the European playing field came out the overall winners of the inaugural Scandinavian Football Championship. Congratulations go to Malmö but be sure that Gothenburg & Copenhagen will be back next year for revenge.

SCANDINAVIAN GAELIC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The inaugural event of the Scandinavian championship was a great success.

Copenhagen and Malmo and Gothenburg provided great matches on the day with

Copenhagen running out eventual winners in a close fought battle with Gothenburg.

Malmö, making their first even run out as a team on the European stage made for a hard and worthy opponent putting up a brave and tough battle in both matches and proved that they will be a team to watch out for in the remaining rounds of the tournament.

This tournament really has set the benchmark with comments that it was one of the best organised tournaments ever attended. A marvellous day was had by all and all teams are looking

forward to Round 2 in Malmö during June.
